Torres critical of defenders
05 Jun 2008 - 08:40:21
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has criticised the quality of defenders in the Premier League.
The Spain striker scored 24 league goals in his first season in English football following a £20million move from Atletico Madrid last summer.
But while the 24-year-old hot-shot believes Chelsea's Ricardo Carvalho is the best in the England, he claims the rest of the defenders in the top-flight leave a lot to be desired.
Torres also believes that Carvalho is a much better centre-half than Chelsea team-mate and England captain John Terry.
"Terry is captain so gets a much higher profile, but he's only secondary to Carvalho," he told The Sun.
"Ricky is superb. He has every quality that is needed.
"The central defenders (in the Premier League) are usually big, strong, aggressive lads.
"I guess it is probably because of these characteristics that the majority think they can solve problems by getting tough with me.
"But the truth is most of them lack defensive positioning as a result of their reliance on strength and aggression and leave so much space for you to take advantage of."
