Torres could face hernia operation

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been told to use Fernando Torres sparingly, or face the possibility that his star striker will need to undergo hernia surgery.

Torres is reportedly suffering from an inguinal hernia he picked up on international duty in October, and the Spaniard has been playing through the pain barrier and rationing his training since.

Torres played just an hour in Liverpool's defeat to Fulham on Saturday, but looks set to start in the crunch Champions League meeting with Lyon on Wednesday.

"We are trying to manage, as he was close to having an operation. Two days after the Fulham game, he is still feeling something," Benitez said.

"He is not comfortable and hasn't got the power he had before, so we have to try to protect him. Fernando cannot play well if you keep pushing him. Maybe if you push him he will be injured for a long time."
