David James was the first Liverpool goalkeeper in the Premier League – making his debut for the club in their first-ever Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest. Although his time at Liverpool saw him get a shaky reputation for a goalkeeper with outstanding shot stopping abilities – but capable to costly mistakes.
David James went on to play 277 times for Liverpool – as well as stints at Aston Villa, West Ham United, Manchester City and Portsmouth. James represented England over 50 occasions as the countries number one.
It was James' move to Portsmouth which really kick started his career as a goalkeeper. He kept five clean sheets in his first five appearances for Portsmouth. It was 22nd of April 2007 where James cemented his place in the legends of Premier League goalkeeping. James kept his 142nd Premier League clean sheet, breaking the record of 141 help previously by Arsenal legend David Seaman.
David James is second in the all time leading appearance holder for The Barclays Premier League and the leading goalkeeper. There was and may still be plenty of doubt in David James' ability – but look at the stats. He has played more Premier League games than any other goalkeeper as well as keeping more clean sheets.
