Top Five: Weird Premier League goals

After Dirk Kuyt's controversial strike against Sunderland on Saturday, Football.co.uk's Joe Strange takes a look at five of the most unconventional goals ever scored in the Premier League.

Darren Bent v Liverpool, 2009

Allowed to stand by referee Mike Jones, Bent's beach ball goal gave Sunderland all three points against a Liverpool side struggling to find their form of the previous season.

Ironically it was one of the Reds travelling supporters who launched the inflatable onto the pitch, causing a strike destined for the arms of Pepe Reina to be diverted straight into the net. Brilliant stuff.

Dion Dublin v Newcastle United, 1997

Known as a stereotypical target-man, Dublin showed his predatory instincts with an uncharacteristically cheeky goal against Shay Given.

The 6ft 2in striker somehow managed to hide behind the Newcastle keeper after he claimed a routine cross, then snuck out to calmly pass the ball into an empty net. Pure genius from the Coventry City man, but pure stupidity from Given.

Stan Collymore v Blackburn Rovers, 1996

Blackburn keeper Tim Flowers used to love kicking lumps out of his own penalty area to make his goal kicks easier to take, well until a home game against Liverpool in the 1995-96 season anyway.

Stan Collymore's tame long-range shot looked to be heading straight into the hands of Flowers until it hit a divot and flew over his shoulder into the net. Even 'Stan the Man' couldn't quite believe it.

Paul Robinson v Watford, 2007

The Tottenham keeper was well known for having a massive kick on him, but even he looked surprised when he scored against Watford.

His huge free kick from just outisde his own area managed to deceive England team-mate Ben Foster, giving Spurs a 2-0 lead at White Hart Lane. It was Robbo's second career goal after bagging a header against Swindon while at Leeds United.

Peter Enckelman v Aston Villa, 2002

Despite insisting that the goal never should have stood, Peter Enckelman's bizarre own goal during a fiery derby against Birmingham has gone down in Midlands folklore.

A quick throw-in from Olof Mellberg was misjudged by the Finnish keeper, the ball grazing his studs before dribbling into the net. Villa's 3-0 defeat was only made worse when a Birmingham fan decided to run on the pitch and laugh in Enckelman's face.
