TOMMY SMITH on Liverpool FC: Changing fortunes must spur Reds on at White Hart Lane TOMORROW'S game at White Hart Lane tells a tale of two football clubs. And for Liverpool supporters, it's not a happy one. Because to all intents and purposes it is Spurs who seem to have moved in where we have slipped down the pecking order. They finished in fourth place last year to qualify for the Champions League, while we bowed out of a tournament we have won five times. They are being tipped to qualify again this season - with some even talking of a title tilt before too long. They have a big squad of players and are now a decent side, whereas we have less strength in depth and have lost top players like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano in the last couple of years. In other words, they are going in the right direction, while we have been going in the wrong direction. It hurts all Liverpool fans to see it happening and to see Spurs effectively taking our place on the top European and domestic stage. Because for decades, you just could not take Tottenham that seriously. Since the 60s, we would regularly beat a side which we regarded to have a bit of a soft underbelly. Therefore, if we can get a victory tomorrow, it will give our season - and our supporters - a huge boost.
