Tommy Smith: Where is Liverpool FC's fighting spirit?

23 December 2009 05:00
IT'S not going to be a happy Christmas for Liverpool fans, is it? The team look to be in dire straits, devoid of confidence, form and spirit - and no sign of an end in sight.[LNB]You can argue about the manager all you like, about tactics and shape, about transfer mistakes and some puzzling selections.[LNB]Of course when a team performs this badly for this long the manager has to ask himself some serious questions. In other words Rafa Benitez can't escape a fair part of the blame.[LNB]But it's not his alone by any means. Not at all.[LNB]The biggest worry for me is the simple lack of energy and fight we're seeing from too many Liverpool players now.[LNB]It's just so flat out there, when everyone in red should be straining every sinew to show how much they care about the club and the fans. Instead the majority of players at Portsmouth gave the impression they are lacking real heart.[LNB]I'm sorry to have to ask it of a Liverpool side but just where has our famous fighting spirit gone?
