TOMMY SMITH: Not the time for Liverpool FC fans to panic yet

19 August 2009 00:00
I'M not panicking about our Premier League title chances after one match. But I am worried. Alarm bells started to ring for me as soon as Xabi Alonso left the club. Because the squad was immediately weakened. I don't know how good Alberto Aquilani will be because we're not going to see him in action for a couple of months at least. But when he does declare himself fit, his record suggests we may not get a full season out of him anyway. Alonso leaving was undoubtedly a huge blow. But there's nothing you can do to stop that. If a player wants to go he wants to go and it's pointless to try and stand in his way. It has been suggested that Lucas may be able to do the job that Alonso did, but I don't buy that.
