Thompson forced to quit

Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has been forced to retire at the age of 30 because of a persistent knee problem.
Thompson made his Reds debut just over 11 years ago in a 2-0 victory against Arsenal and went on to make 48 appearances for the club, scoring five times.
He moved to Coventry City in the summer of 2000 and spent two seasons with the Sky Blues before signing for Blackburn Rovers in a £1.5million deal.
It was during his time at Ewood Park that Thompson began to struggle with injuries and he left Rovers on a free transfer in January 2006, having made only 64 appearances in almost four years with the club.
He had brief spells with Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers but was released by the Trotters at the end of last term.
Earlier this month, Thompson had an unsuccessful trial with Sheffield United.
