The Tipster: Bolton to smash and grab points at Anfield

31 December 2010 10:46
After last week's debacle, the Tipster isn't going to fall into the same trap of trying to be a smartypants again. Predicting a Sunderland upset at Old Trafford proved an awful call, as Manchester United eased past the Black Cats with one of their more fluent performances of the season so far.

United come up against West Brom on New Year's Day and despite a return to their iffy away form at Birmingham in midweek, it's unlikely they will fall to a Baggies side that have lost their last three games and sit just three points above the relegation zone.

The Tipster isn't endorsing it, but it you do fancy a flutter on Alex Ferguson's side drawing an eighth game on the road out of nine this season, Coral has a stalemate at 10-3.

Far more enticing is the Liverpool-Bolton game at Anfield. Let's not beat around the bush here: Liverpool are a club in crisis. They head into the New Year in 12th place, off the back of an abysmal defeat to Wolves and with boos still ringing in Roy Hodgson's ears.

With 22 points on the board, like West Brom, Liverpool are just three points above the drop zone and unless a drastic turnaround of form is found in 2011 they are in real danger of being sucked into a relegation dog fight. Is it any wonder the Kop was singing Kenny Dalglish's name the other night?

It's not going to get any easier for the Reds either, with Bolton travelling to Merseyside on Saturday. The Trotters are without doubt the surprise package of the season so far, ending the year in sixth place following a defeat to Chelsea that easily could have been very much different.

Recent away form - three defeats in their last three trips, to Manchester City, Sunderland and Chelsea - suggest Owen Coyle's side struggle away from home, but given the low morale currently permeating through Anfield, Saturday represents a golden opportunity for Bolton to end that run.

And Liverpool aren't too hot in North-West derbies this season either: they've only managed to win seven points from seven games with a goal difference of minus five. Only Wigan have a worse record, with just three points. Totesport have a Bolton win at 5-1, while a draw is at 14-5 with Boyle Sports.

Johan Elmander has had a great deal to do with Bolton's rise to the upper echelons of the Premier League this season, the Swede having found the back of the net nine times, his latest coming in last weekend's victory over West Brom. Coral have the striker at 3-1 to score his 10th of the season at anytime at Anfield, or even better 9-1 to open the scoring and make those New Year hangovers on the Kop even more painful.
