Team of the Week: Kuyt sinks Manchester United

Football.co.uk's Nick Teale looks back over the weekend's Premier League action to pick his best XI.

Goalkeeper - Jussi Jaaskelainen

Jaaskelainen may have conceded twice against Aston Villa but a string a fine saves means that the Bolton keeper edges Sunderland's Simon Mignolet for the No. 1 jersey in this week's 'Team of the Week'.

The Finnish stopped pulled off a superb diving save to deny Ashley Young from the penalty spot, a moment which proved to be the turning point in Bolton's victory.

Right-back - Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker's loan spell at Aston Villa may only be six games old but the Tottenham man has already proved to be a revelation. England finally have a player who can seriously challenge Glen Johnson for a regular place in the national team and Spurs have found a right-back who can star for the club for the next decade.

At Bolton on Saturday he assisted Darren Bent for Villa's first goal after surging down the right and produced another impressive display, despite being on the losing side.

Central defence - Gary Cahill

Two goals and another solid defensive display from Gary Cahill will have left Gerard Houllier wishing the Bolton centre back was still an Aston Villa player.

Top-four clubs have been courting Cahill for some time now and unfortunately for Owen Coyle it seems only a matter of time until the Englishman makes a big-money move away from Reebok Stadium.

Central defence - Manuel Da Costa

Manuel Da Costa's towering headed-goal against Stoke certainly caught the eye on Saturday but his confident performance at centre back was even more crucial to West Ham in their 3-0 home victory.

The Hammers are now out of the relegation zone and if Da Costa continues to perform as he did over the weekend, Avram Grant's side could well remain outside the bottom three.

Left-back - Leighton Baines

The best left-back in the Premier League this season and one of few positives in a difficult year for Everton, Baines again provided the goods for his side over the weekend.

A superb free-kick allowed Phil Jagielka to score the winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Newcastle.

Right midfield - Dirk Kuyt

Scoring a hat-trick against Manchester United is some feat - only two other players have managed it in the Premier League. While Kuyt's treble may well be the easiest any player will ever score, his relentless energy and intelligent play was as vital as ever to his side's victory.

Always making the right decisions at the right time, some would argue Kuyt earned his hat-trick by ensuring he was in position to net his three goals. His developing partnership with Luis Suarez gives Liverpool fans plenty to be excited about.

Central midfield - Damien Duff

Duff's assured performance in central midfield spurred Fulham to a 3-2 win over Blackburn on Saturday, easing any relegation fears Mark Hughes' side may have had.

The midfielder's brace consisted of a low drive, which somewhat fortuitously slipped under Paul Robinson, and an impressive strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Central midfield - Thomas Hitzlsperger

Avram Grant churned out the old football cliché that Hitzlsperger's recent return from a six-month layoff is 'like having a new signing'.

The midfielder impressed throughout the Hammers' win over Stoke. He created his side's second and netted their third, crashing home in the last minute.

Left midfield - Mikel Arteta

With Marouane Fellaini out for the rest of the season, Everton will be looking to Arteta to produce more of what he delivered against Newcastle.

The midfielder looked revitalised at St James' Park. Cutting in from the left, Arteta caused problems for the hosts and supplied Leon Osman for the Toffees' equaliser.

Striker - Luis Suarez

It's only a month since Suarez made his Liverpool debut but he's impressed for Kenny Dalglish's side every time he's played.

Sunday was no different and the Uruguayan was a constant problem for Manchester United, walking through their defence to assist Dirk Kuyt for the opening goal and striking the free-kick which led to the Red's third goal.

Striker - Kevin Doyle

Doyle's first-half brace went a long way to earning Wolves a deserved point against Tottenham on Sunday. His first came from a clever flicked header and his second came from the penalty spot.

Mick McCarthy's side are now unbeaten in three Premier League matches and will be relying on Doyle to add to his current tally of five Premier League goals if they are to avoid the drop in a tight relegation battle.
