Suarez to leave Liverpool?

Liverpool lost their 8th league game last night leaving them in 9th position in the Barclays Premier League. The victors - West Brom, completed their first double over Liverpool in 46 years and in the process, leapfrogged them into 8th position.

On a night where Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez were below average, the rest of the Liverpool side proved, yet again, that they aren’t good enough to step up, fill in the void and push Liverpool towards a decent league finish.

With Daniel Sturridge missing, the side looked laboured and Suarez and Gerrard both looked tired, which is unsurprising as they have been carrying the Liverpool side all season.

In fact, Steven Gerrard has been carrying the team for a lot longer than that. But, Suarez is sure to not follow in Gerrard’s footsteps. Gerrard had genuine reason to believe in Liverpool, playing alongside the likes of Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres. Last night, Suarez started up front with Jonjo Shelvey who was replaced by Fabio Borini. They simply aren’t of the same calibre.

Luis Suarez is one of the most exciting footballers in the world, and he deserves Champions League football. He won’t get that at Liverpool, and could potentially be asking his agent for a move in the summer. Manchester City are one club that will feel they need fire power, and perhaps the departure of Balotelli and potentially Tevez, might make Suarez their number one summer target.

But where would that leave Liverpool? Brendan Rodgers is implementing a decent brand of football, but he has too many average footballers. Liverpool need to retain Suarez and need to sign other players of his calibre. With the likes of Carragher retiring and Gerrard entering the twilight of his career, they need to replace their top quality players like for like. Otherwise, they will continue to be an average team, and their hunt for trophies will remain doubtful.
