Sept 16, Marseille 1-2 Liverpool Rocked by Lorik Cana's strike for a lively Marseille side in the intimidating Stade Velodrome, Gerrard single-handedly rescues Liverpool from another defeat at the hands of their Champions League bêtes noires. He scores a sublime, outswinging effort and then calmly converts a penalty to earn his side three precious points. Oct 1, Liverpool 3-1 PSV Eindhoven An ordinary game against ordinary opponents enlivened only by the Liverpool captain's 100th goal for the club, a ferocious 30-yard free kick in front of the Kop. Dec 28, Newcastle 1-5 Liverpool Thanks to the Southport incident which followed Liverpool's best display of the season thus far, Gerrard probably has reason to wish to forget his day on Tyneside. Two delightfully taken goals as Benitez's team cemented their place at the top of the Premier League were evidence of a player at the top of his game, though. Jan 25, Liverpool 1-1 Everton Just six days after scoring in another 1-1 draw in a Merseyside derby, Gerrard – temporarily – broke Evertonian hearts when his shot squirmed under Tim Howard to earn Liverpool an FA Cup replay. The relief was bittersweet, though, as Gerrard limped off in that game at Goodison Park as Liverpool crashed out. Feb 1, Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea It was Fernando Torres's late double strike to get Liverpool's title challenge back on track after a faltering January which earned the headlines, but Gerrard was at the heart of a performance which dominated a poor Chelsea side for 90 minutes. March 10, Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid The night Europe's ultimate aristocrats were sacrificed at Anfield's altar, and Gerrard was central to it all. He scored twice, one a penalty and the other a thunderous half-volley, and combined effortlessly with Fernando Torres, ruthlessly exposing Real's shortcomings. March 14, Manchester Utd 1-4 Liverpool A date no Liverpool fan is likely to forget. Rafa Benitez masterminded the club's biggest win at Old Trafford in 60 years, but it all hinged on Gerrard's penalty on the stroke of half-time, coolly slotted home to hand Liverpool the lead. March 22, Liverpool 5-0 Aston Villa The Liverpool captain scored three, two penalties and one precisely placed free kick, as his team thrashed Aston Villa, at one point considered legitimate championship contenders themselves, to close within a point of United and blow the title race wide open. May 9, West Ham 0-3 Liverpool With the club's title hopes fading, Gerrard is in inspired form to keep the fans' faith alive. He rounds Robert Green after just 76 seconds to open the scoring then taps in his own saved penalty to wrap the game up by half-time.
