Steven Gerrard corrects barrister over celebrated goal

David Turner, QC, prosecuting, appeared convinced that the star had beaten the entire Newcastle defence before knocking the ball past the goalkeeper. "No, I flicked it over him," said Mr Gerrard. The hapless barrister mistakenly thought he had subsequently scored another goal in Newcastle's 5-1 drubbing, but again his celebrity defendant had to correct him. "It was the last goal," he said. "It was a really good goal," enthused the barrister. Moments earlier the Liverpool and England player had listened patiently, sometimes breaking into a faint smile, as Mr Turner extolled his virtues on the pitch. "You are a great footballer," said the barrister. Mr Gerrard glanced across the courtroom and replied: "Thank you." Mr Turner praised the player's "amazing speed", pinpoint accuracy and strength. He went on: "Just because you're Steven Gerrard, they don't get out of your way, do they?" His witness replied: "No." Mr Turner: "You have amazing coordination and timing. That's what makes you better than everyone else." Mr Gerrard, seemingly perplexed, smiled wanly. "Is that your opinion?" he replied. Both agreed that it had been "a pretty good way" to end 2008, with Liverpool at the top of the Premiership, ahead of Manchester United, at a crucial time in the season. The barrister then moved on to question Mr Gerrard about his rather less celebrated skills as a boxer.
