Steven Gerrard 'better' as Liverpool plot Champions League fightback at Chelsea

The England international was rested for Saturday's 4-0 win over Blackburn after picking up a groin injury in the 3-1 defeat to Guus Hiddink's side at Anfield last week that left Liverpool needing a miracle if they are to reach their fourth semi-final in five years. Benitez's side must beat Chelsea by three goals if they are to overturn their deficit, a task which the Spaniard admits would be much more feasible if he could call upon a fully fit and on form Gerrard. He said: "He is better but he is still working with the physios. He will have one more day of training and then after we will see how he feels. If we can play with him, it does make a difference. Clearly we need him, he is a key player for us. Everything can change if he can play and if he plays well. "We will talk with the doctor and with Steven before the game. It is not a massive risk but there is a small one because you could lose the player for 10-15 days and that would be bad. He was playing with some problems before though, so I think we can manage." Since the defeat at Anfield on Wednesday, Liverpool's players have been keen to highlight the club's recent history of recording unlikely wins, from the 4-1 victory at Old Trafford to the magnificent comeback in Istanbul against AC Milan. It is no surprise that Benitez feels such famous results can only serve to inspire his side, but he is also keen to point out the lessons that can be learned from Bolton's success at the weekend. He said: "Yes, you can take heart from them scoring three goals there on Saturday. It shows if you play well and have a bit of luck, you can score a goal, so we will see. It will be good for the club if we can win, so we will try to win. "The inspiration of Istanbul could be helpful. If we have the fans behind us and can give them something from the beginning, then it would be a very good inspiration. You approach the away games thinking about winning. In this case, if it's possible, we need to score an early goal and then we will play with more confidence."
