Sterling and Kane tipped for big money moves - But are English players overpriced?

22 June 2015 09:44

Rio Ferdinand tweeted yesterday that English players are way overpriced in the market, with Liverpool's Raheem Sterling & Spurs striker Harry Kane reported to be around the £40-50m barrier each, these players not even at their full potential yet, does this make sense to spend this amount of money on players not proven at the top for a number of years, especially now with FIFA fair play rules in place?

Lets take a look at the most expensive players in the history of the English game, prices have boomed since the turn of the Millennium. There are no places for Shearer, Owen, Lampard, Scholes, Gerrard, Terry or Ashley Cole in the list as these players commanded lower transfer fees & some played for one club only.

The top 10 has some major flops in this list:

Andy Carroll (2011 Newcastle to Liverpool, £35m)

Rio Ferdinand (2002 Leeds to Manchester United, £29.1m)

Wayne Rooney (2004 Everton to Manchester United, £27m)

Luke Shaw (2014 Southampton to Manchester United, 27m)

James Milner (2011 Aston Villa to Manchester City, £26m)

David Beckham (2003 Manchester United to Real Madrid, £25m)

Adam Lallama (2014 Southampton to Liverpool, £25m)

Darren Bent (2011 Sunderland to Aston Villa, £24m)

Joloen Lescott (2009 Everton to Manchester City, £22m)

Shaun Wright-Phillips (2005 Manchester City to Chelsea, £21m)

Do you agree fees are blown out of proportion for home talent?
