Spurs' Redknapp leaves Rafa standing in the race to recruit Johnson

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will beat Liverpool for the £10million signature of England right-back Glen Johnson from Portsmouth this summer. Johnson, who will have to be sold by Portsmouth to ease the club's financial woes, is a native Londoner and wants to move back to the capital. And his close relationship with Redknapp - his former manager at West Ham - has given Spurs the edge, despite interest from Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez. The capture of Johnson will be just the start of a whirlwind summer for Redknapp, who wants to rebuild the Tottenham team. Redknapp is keen on Blackburn's £5m-rated left-back Stephen Warnock to give Spurs a harder edge and also wants a new goalkeeper and centre-forward, with Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones and Portsmouth's Peter Crouch under consideration. There could be as many as eight departures from White Hart Lane, with Redknapp prepared to listen to offers for David Bentley, Heurelho Gomes, Gareth Bale, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent.
