Spain want Torres to be rested

    14 Feb 2010 - 15:36:02

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque hopes Liverpool will not rush star striker Fernando Torres back to first-team action too quickly.

Rafa Benitez has hinted that Torres may be ready for a recall next weekend but del Bosque wants the striker to remain as fresh as possible ahead of this summer's World Cup finals.

Torres, who scored the winning goal in Spain's Euro 2008 Final victory against Germany, has made just 16 Premier League appearances for the Reds this term, although he has managed to find the net 12 times.

Del Bosque said: "We'd like him fresh for the tournament. That can only be good news for Spain. We hope Liverpool's loss will be our gain. Fernando Torres represents a crucial part of our squad.

"The fewer games Fernando plays for his club, the better it will be for us. We want him not to play too many games, to recover completely for the World Cup and have had some rest in between."
