Skrtel verdict boosts Reds
08 Oct 2008 - 07:55:08
Liverpool have been boosted by the news that the knee injury suffered by defender Martin Skrtel in the 3-2 win at Manchester City is not as serious as was first feared.
Scans on the Slovakian's right knee had shown up damage to his posterior cruciate ligament, but further tests have revealed that an operation will not be needed.
Reds spokesman Ian Cotton told the club's official website: "Martin was examined by a specialist, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas."
Cotton had previously expected a more serious blow, having previously stated: "Martin underwent a scan on Monday morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
"He will see a specialist on Tuesday to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the time-scales involved before he is back playing again."
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez admitted that losing Skrtel was a blow to his side, but is pleased that the stopper will be back in action sooner than expected.
He added: "To lose a player who is doing well is always a problem. It is bad news, but we have other options."
Danish centre-half Daniel Agger is expected to partner Jamie Carragher in the Reds defence in the absence of Skrtel.
