    Skrtel scan confirms bad news

    06 Oct 2008 - 12:07:20

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a scan confirmed he suffered posterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee during Sunday's 3-2 victory at Manchester City.

The Slovakia international, who had to be stretchered off the pitch after falling awkwardly on the edge of his own penalty area, will find out on Tuesday how long he will be out of action.

"Martin underwent a scan on Monday morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," Reds spokesman Ian Cotton told the club's official website.

"He will see a specialist on Tuesday to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the time-scales involved before he is back playing again."

Meanwhile, Dirk Kuyt, who scored the stoppage-time winner at Eastlands, believes Rafa Benitez's current squad is capable of sustaining a title challenge this term.

Sunday's win extended the Reds' unbeaten start to the season to seven matches and left them equal on points with early leaders Chelsea.

Kuyt said: "We try to make a statement every week. Every three games we have a big game. We had Everton and PSV last week, and our target is just to win every game and try to be there by the end of the season.

"But it was vital to keep pace with Chelsea before the internationals. We can leave with a good feeling.

"We've already had one international break and we came back in our first game after it and beat Manchester United, so I wouldn't say it comes at a bad time.

"Anyway, we don't need any excuses. We'll just keep on going and see how we do against Wigan in our next game."
