Skrtel feared career was over
10 Oct 2008 - 08:57:59
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel admitted he feared his career might be over after suffering serious knee ligament damage against Manchester City last weekend.
The Slovakia international required oxygen on the pitch after twisting his knee and collapsing during the 3-2 victory at Eastlands.
Initial reports suggested the defender had suffered cruciate ligament damage and could be out of action for up to nine months.
However, subsequent assessments allayed those fears with scans revealing damage to his posterior cruciate ligament and no need for surgery.
But recalling those moments on the pitch at the City of Manchester Stadium, the 23-year-old admitted he feared the worst.
"The pain was unbearable," he said. "I can't remember a lot about the moment but it was terrible. I thought that was the end for me.
"I have never suffered anything like that before but I remained conscious and they gave me oxygen to help with the pain.
"I was in shock for a while but now I am coming to terms with what happened. It hurts still, but things are getting better."
