Skrtel: We've been unlucky
22 May 2009 - 12:37:22
Defender Martin Skrtel believes Liverpool can consider themselves unlucky not to be crowned Premier League champions this season.
The Reds are likely to finish at least second to champions Manchester United this season and the Slovakia international believes their form against the other leading teams means they should have been celebrating a first title in 20 years.
"We will most likely finish second but I am convinced we could have finished higher," he told the club's official website.
"Why? Because in the games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal we have not been beaten, and the first two teams mentioned we beat home and away.
"If there was a table of the teams from the top four, I think we would have been in first place.
"Unfortunately, we dropped too many points against teams from the lower part of the table. We did not manage to win against teams which defended with nine or ten men."
Meanwhile, Skrtel is confident that manager Rafael Benitez will improve the squad in the summer and that next season will finally see the Reds end their long wait for league glory.
He added: "We must work on removing these draws. Rafa will surely think up something new to help us improve.
"Of course, we are disappointed by not claiming the title, but to finish runners-up is also very nice.
"If we can bring the positive things into next season, then I believe we will finally win the league."
