Six Players to leave Liverpool in the summer
There’s been a lot of talk surrounding players who will or could join Liverpool this summer, names like Toby Alderweireld and his Ajax team mate Christian Eriksen seem to be names that are top of that list, almost on a daily basis.
But for these players to arrive Liverpool will certainly have to offload a large chunk of their squad to make room for new summer arrivals.
So let's start from the back and work our way forward .....
The first obvious one i can see is Peter Gulácsi, who is almost certain to leave in the summer; the young Hungarian goal keeper has yet to make the breakthrough at Liverpool since joining them in 2008 and has only featured sparingly during his time at the club.
There was talk of him moving to Spain to join Xerex last summer but the deal fell through due to a last minute hitch.
Next of the list is the defence and everyone is obviously aware that Jamie Carragher will retire at the end of the season (to join some form of punditry team) but from what it would seem he won’t be the only defender to leave Liverpool in the summer with Sebastian Coates said to be unhappy at his role at the club and Brendan Rodgers unsure over his reliability at the back.
The Mirror reported in January that Brazilian side Gremio (where former Reds defender Fabio Aurelio currently plies his trade) were keen on signing the Uruguayan, but it also seems that Sao Paulo are keen on Coates.
Martin Skrtel is another defender who could be moved on after an alleged falling out with Rodgers over his man management of the Slovakian captain and an alarming loss of form over the course of the season.
Skrtel's former club Zenit St. Petersburg have already registered an interest in taking him back to Russian, also big spending Anzhi Machachkala were said to be on the lookout for a new centre-back after the sale of Christopher Samba to QPR back in January, with Rodgers knowing he needs to raise cash this it would seem that he is ready to cash in on the big Slovak.
Next up is the midfield and you would have thought that names like last season’s flop, Stewart Downing and the England U-21's captain Jordan Henderson might have made this list, but no, not this time ....... the man I’m referring to is one Jay Spearing.
The on-loan midfielder is doing a decent job over at Bolton Wanderers but in my view he isn’t up to the standards of Liverpool's starting XI.
He has all the attributes of a player you'd expect to come from Liverpool, he’s passionate, fiery, and works hard but those qualities alone don’t mean you can land a place in the Liverpool line-up so look for Brendan Rodgers to re-asses the local lads future in the summer but its more than likely he'll be moved on.
On to the big guns, and by that I’m referring to 6ft 3in Andy Carroll.
Liverpool's record signing in 2011 has endured a tough time since his £35m move from Newcastle.
He came to Liverpool injured and it’s just never really worked out for the England striker.
Brendan Rodgers sent him out on loan to West Ham where he's had a chance a regular football and its showing, as he's scored 5 in 17 (at time of writing).
The Anfield boss though doesn’t see Carroll's type of footballer as being the sort of player he wants to have at Liverpool and will look to move him on in the summer.
West Ham are thought to have a deal in place with the Reds if they attain Premier League survival this season about signing Carroll on a permanent basis, Newcastle though are thought to be keen to bring the player they sold in 2011 back to the North East.
The final man on the list is Italy's Fabio Borini.
The former AS Roma man has not had an easy time at Liverpool so far with injuries hampering his chances at regular playing time and being deployed out of position when he does get games.
Borini's currently sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, which is the second serious injury he's sustained since joining the Reds last summer.
He's yet to find the net for Liverpool in the league this season which is worrying and with Fiorentina having expressed an interest in the Italian while we are not openly looking to sell a bid of 8m would be hard to turn down.
