Xabi Alonso is stalling on a new deal at Real Madrid - and Liverpool are waiting in the wings to bring him back to Anfield.

The former Liverpool man, 31, has been an integral figure for the Spanish champions since swapping Merseyside for Madrid in the summer of 2009. But reports in Spain claim he has yet to respond to the Real's desire to extend his contract, which expires in 2014.

The midfielder is not in a hurry to renew and is waiting to see what happens to boss Jose Mourinho, who has been tipped to leave the Bernabeu in the summer. Whatever happens, Real are not keen on selling Alonso - despite the fact Liverpool have enquired about his availability in recent months.

According to Bleacher Report; Xabi Alonso had this to say on his future “I have not decided on my future. I will only stay at Real Madrid if I can offer the same level on the pitch as I can now and we will see what happens in the next few months. There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there.”

Alonso is both a leader and a first-rate player, and his presence on the Liverpool squad would be extremely beneficial. Xabi Alonso has spoken of his love and support for Liverpool Football Club, could he return to the team that propelled him into a world class midfielder?
