Saunders in for O'Driscoll

Doncaster have placed manager Sean O'Driscoll on gardening leave after a poor start to the npower Championship season and drafted in former Liverpool star Dean Saunders from Wrexham to take charge of the team this weekend.

Rovers made the announcement on Friday morning with the club bottom of the table with only one point from seven matches.

"It is with regret that the shareholders of Doncaster Rovers FC have taken the decision based on the long run of poor results that Sean O'Driscoll and (assistant) Richard O'Kelly be put on gardening leave," a club statement said.

"They felt that action needed to be taken to address the current position.

"They would like to thank Sean and Richard for all their work during the five years at the club including winning at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley."

The statement added that Saunders will take charge of the club's match with Crystal Palace on Saturday, although it did not say in what capacity the Welshman - still listed as manager on the website of financially troubled Wrexham - is joining Rovers.

The club was not immediately available for comment on the situation.

O'Driscoll had received the public backing of Rovers chairman John Ryan only two days ago.

"I've never responded to hotheads who want to sack somebody, I don't think it's ever worked, look at Sheffield United," Ryan said.
