Liverpool have continued their policy of recruiting some of Europe's leading young talent after agreeing to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San Jose. Fresh from the capture of Bulgaria Under-21 international goalkeeper Nikolaj Mihajlov from Levski Sofia, Reds boss Rafael Benitez has moved to sign the 18-year-old defender from the Basque club. "For us it is bad news, but Mikel has decided on the choice of Liverpool and it was impossible for us to fight against a European giant," confirmed a Bilbao statement. San Jose added: "It was a surprise for me but I have decided to accept the chance at Liverpool. "I am very excited but now I know that I have to work more each day to get in the first team." Liverpool have already landed teenage Hungarian pair Krisztian Nemeth and Andras Simon this summer. The quartet will join Liverpool's new look academy which will be headed by Piet Hamberg. The former Ajax player has joined the club as their new academy technical manager from a similar role at Grasshoppers of Zurich.
