Roy Hodgson bemoans defensive lapse which costs Liverpool dear[LNB]ROY HODGSON was left to rue the lapse in concentration which cost Liverpool a point at Old Trafford yesterday.[LNB]Steven Gerrard's double dragged the Reds level midway through the second half but some poor defending allowed Dimitar Berbatov to nod home the winner six minutes from time.[LNB]The Bulgarian became the first United player to score a hat-trick against the Reds for 64 years.[LNB]John O'Shea was fortunate to stay on after bringing down Fernando Torres in the lead up to Liverpool's second goal but Hodgson insisted the Reds only had themselves to blame for not taking anything from the contest.[LNB] 'It would be churlish to talk about whether a player should be sent off because our downfall in terms of not getting the point was due to the fact that we should have defended better for the third goal,' he said.[LNB]'I don't have too much of problem with the first two. The first was a wonderful corner kick and header, while the second was a bit of genius that is hard to defend against.[LNB]'But the third was far too routine and having done so well to get back to 2-2, I thought we should have kept it.[LNB]'We've had a very hard start but our performance today was clearly much better than against West Brom and Birmingham. We were playing against a top class team. We can take a lot of credit by the way we went about our business and got back into the game from 2-0 down to 2-2. I thought the quality of our football was quite good.'
