Rooney gunning for PFA prize
Wayne Rooney and Liverpool star Fernando Torres meet in the ultimate Premier League battle to decide the PFA August/September Premier League fans' player of the month. The pair of forwards have been in great form for their respective clubs, and are battling Chelsea's Frank Lampard and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard for the top monthly honour. Rooney has been in sensational form for club and country so far this term, scoring six in six for the Red Devils in the Premier League. The talismanic striker has made vast improvements in front of goal, and the fans have noticed by pushing him into contention for the first top honour from the PFA. The Premier League elite is queuing up to challenge behind him, and Fernando Torres has taken the mantle after a string of improved performances in September. Despite a supposed 'poor' start to the season, Torres has scored five in five league games, including a wonderful brace against West Ham United last weekend. 'El Nino' will need the backing of the Anfield faithful though if he is to shoot down his Manchester United rival. Table-toppers Chelsea always seem to be involved when awards are on the table, and this month is no different with Frank Lampard pushing hard in the list of contenders. The Blues midfielder has created more chances than any other player in the Premier League so far this season, and despite only scoring one goal, the midfielder is regarded as the heartbeat of the Stamford Bridge side. An outside chance is Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The Reds skipper was not electric out of the blocks as normal, but produced a stunning display and winner against Bolton Wanderers to the delight of the Reds faithful. His influence is un-questionable, his place as a Liverpool legend secured, and Gerrard could add another award to his collection with further backing from the Merseyside masses.
