Norwegian full-back John Arne Riise will miss the start of Liverpool's Champions League campaign after aggravating an ankle injury during Saturday's 3-0 Merseyside derby defeat.

Riise originally suffered torn lateral ligaments in his left ankle during the opening day draw at Sheffield United, but was passed fit to sit on the bench at Goodison Park.

He came on after 64 minutes, but was stretchered off quarter of an hour later after injuring himself when bringing down Mikel Arteta.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez told the club's official website: "It's not serious but John will be out for the next ten to 15 days."

Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
