Reina pleads with Gerrard to stay

03 Jun 2010 - 10:53:10

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has pleaded with Steven Gerrard to reject any advances from Real Madrid this summer.

Gerrard is rumoured to be high on new Real boss Jose Mourinho's wish-list following his appointment at the helm of the big-spending Spanish club.

Mourinho previously tried to sign the Reds captain during his time as Chelsea manager.

Gerrard is reported to be unsettled at Anfield following a below-par season and the current unrest at boardroom level.

Manager Rafael Benitez is believed to be close to seeing his six-year reign on Merseyside ended, while the club was put back up for sale by co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks earlier in the year.

But despite the myriad distractions, Reina has urged the England midfielder to remain at Anfield should Madrid come calling during the summer transfer window.

"I hope Gerrard stays a long time at Liverpool, that he is with us for the rest of his career," said the Spain goalkeeper.

"Mourinho knows him very well and he is a footballer who can play in any team in the world.

"He is part of the elite, among the 10 best in the world because he is a very complete footballer.

"Let's hope they don't take him away."
