Reds play down Torres concern
06 Nov 2009 - 09:15:48
Liverpool have denied reports that Fernando Torres requires surgery and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Spain striker has struggled with an ongoing groin problem during the opening months of the season.
Speaking after Wednesday's Champions League draw with Lyon, manager Rafael Benitez admitted his ten-goal leading scorer was not 100 per cent fit.
However, Benitez was adamant that he will not rush to decide whether Torres or injured skipper Steven Gerrard should have operations.
But following newspaper reports that Torres returned to Spain after the game for a second opinion on his injury, a club spokesperson has denied that a decision has already been taken to send the striker for surgery which could sideline him until after Christmas.
"Fernando attended a Liverpool hospital for further tests," he said.
"It is nothing more dramatic than that. It is just further tests as part of his rehabilitation programme."
