Argentina winger Maxi Rodriguez is close to joining Liverpool after arriving in England for a medical.

The 29-year-old Atletico Madrid wideman is believed to have agreed an 18-month deal with the Reds after the two clubs settled on a fee in the region of £2million for his services.

Rodriguez will be in the stands when the Reds take on Reading in an FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday night.

Speaking last week, manager Rafael Benitez revealed that a deal to sign the former Espanyol midfielder was imminent.

"You never know with time-scales," he said. "It's a question of everything being more or less agreed."

The impending arrival of Rodriguez casts further doubt over Ryan Babel's Anfield future.

The Netherlands winger has been the subject of one £8million approach from Birmingham City this month which the Reds rejected.
