Reds hopeful over Carra
13 Sep 2007 - 15:28:41
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez expects Jamie Carragher to be fit for Saturday's Premier League trip to Portsmouth.
The Reds defender has been sidelined for the last two games with a broken rib injury, but returned to training on Thursday and is in contention for the visit to Fratton Park.
"I think Jamie will be fit," said Benitez.
"He was training on Thursday and we need to check him once he has trained again to see if he can play.
"He's important to us because we don't have too many centre-backs and it is important we keep them fit."
Meanwhile, Benitez has no concerns over Steven Gerrard's recent fractured toe after the Reds captain came through both of England's Euro 2008 qualifiers unscathed.
"I have confidence in this situation," added Benitez.
"I spoke with Steven before (the two England games). I know he wanted to play and he felt he could play.
"He was a hero for England and it had been a very positive week for him and us in that sense."
