Liverpool are angry that Steve Finnan was accused of racially abusing
Manchester United's Patrice Evra during the Reds' recent game at
Old trafford.
The Republic of Ireland international was accused by two deaf fans of mouthing racist abuse at Evra.
Greater Manchester Police have decided not to proceed with any action over the alleged incident and Liverpool, although relieved that the matter will not be investigated, are annoyed that the matter went as far as it did.
A club spokesman told the Liverpool Echo: "Greater Manchester Police confirmed that after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service that they will not be pursuing the claims.
"Obviously we welcome the news but it is important to point out that when the accusations were first made we had the television footage analysed by lip reading experts.
"They confirmed that Steve Finnan never taunted any of the players with racial abuse and there is not a shred of evidence to support this ridiculous claim.
"So although we are pleased with the news I think it is disgraceful that Steve Finnan's good name has been dragged through the mud over completely unsubstantiated allegations that he has vehemently denied throughout."
