    Reds await Alonso results

    04 Jan 2009 - 10:25:18

Liverpool are unsure whether Xabi Alonso will face a spell on the sidelines after limping out of the 2-0 FA Cup third round win at Preston North End.

The Spain international picked up a foot injury on the stroke of half-time and failed to reappear for the second half at Deepdale.

"Unfortunately Xabi has had seven stitches in his instep," assistant boss Sammy Lee told the club's official website.

"We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore tonight.

"Hopefully there will be no damage but we won't know for the next 24 or 48 hours."

Meanwhile, Lee praised Steven Gerrard after the captain's man-of-the-match display just days after he was charged with assault and affray.

Gerrard was released from Southport police station in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after being charged and bailed along with two other men following an alleged altercation outside a bar which left one man needing hospital treatment.

"Steven is a top professional," said Lee. "He has the full support of this football club.

"You have seen what he is today, a footballer. He produced a terrific performance, he is a model professional and we're all behind him.

"He's a great servant to this club, a terrific ambassador and we'll continue to support him throughout."
