Reds agree Keane fee

02 Feb 2009 - 16:02:22

Robbie Keane's return to Tottenham is on the verge of being completed after Liverpool confirmed they had agreed a transfer fee for the Republic of Ireland international.

The 28-year-old striker has scored seven goals in 28 appearances since swapping north London for Merseyside last August.

However, his inability to hold down a place in Rafael Benitez's starting line-up had led to suggestions that he could be on his way out of Anfield.

A spokesman told the Reds' official website: "Liverpool Football Club have reached agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the sale of Robbie Keane."

Keane was omitted from Benitez's 18-man squad for Sunday's 2-0 victory over Chelsea and now seems set to end his sorry stint on Merseyside.

Liverpool paid £20.3million to sign the forward in August and the Anfield club were believed to be holding out for a full refund on their outlay.

Wow, an amazing post. Well done Ritesh Lamsal. I fully agree with your opinion.

It has been a sensational story - that of Robby Keane - the story that revolved so much around Keane chasing his boy-hood dream to Anfield, and then returning unhappy and rather miserable back to Tottenham. Life goes in full circles - his has been just that! Liverpool lost a lot from this. For starters, 8 million pounds (20 million minus 12 million), but more importantly, they squandered a real opportunity to get a decent striker, who could have been far more influential in their Title quest. Tottenham lost miserably too - they are battling for their very survival in the League. Rafa lost a bit too - got a bashing from fans/experts/”insiders” about his handling of Robbie. Of course, he missed out (or has he?) on a rare opportunity for a Red-Manager to lift the League trophy! Robbie lost too - his boyhood dream vanished in a flash, he lost so many adoring fans, he lost form, his captaincy and some self-confidence too. Ironically and amazingly, the only person who gained anything was the fired coach Juande Ramos! He got an opportunity to move ahead to a bigger club and he seems to be doing fine there. Football is amazing!
