Liverpool slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Rapid Vienna in their latest pre-season friendly in Austria. Rapid skipper Steffen Hofmann netted the only goal with a second half free-kick to see off a strong Reds side which included Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Yossi Benayoun. Sunderland recorded their second successive win under new boss Steve Bruce by beating Portimonense 1-0 in Portugal. Half-time substitute Carlos Edwards scored the only goal after home keeper Ale spilled an Anthony Stokes shot. Elsewhere, a Hull XI recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory over non-league side Winterton Rangers. Tom Cairney finally broke the deadlock two minutes before the break and George Boateng doubled the visitors' lead shortly after the hour mark. Dean Marney netted the third in the 75th minute latching onto a rebound from trialist Jerome Thomas' effort.
