Reds start at Spurs

Premier League title-hopefuls Liverpool start 2009/10 with a trip to Tottenham as Rafa Benitez's men return to the scene of one of only two top-flight defeats last season. The Reds, who missed out on league silverware by only four points in 2008/09, will want revenge at White Hart Lane, which has become a fortress for Spurs under Harry Redknapp, after surrendering the lead to lose 2-1 in North London last November. Benitez will view an end-of-term run-in that includes games against Birmingham, Fulham, West Ham and newly-promoted Burnley as favourable, but a potentially massive clash with Chelsea at Anfield in the penultimate match could prove decisive. Liverpool's first meeting with arch-rivals and defending champions Manchester United takes place on home soil on 24th October, before the return clash at Old Trafford on 20th March 2010. The first Merseyside derby against Everton arrives at the end of November at Goodison Park, while the Reds welcome their neighbours from across Stanley Park in the first week of February. Liverpool play Hull City at the KC Stadium on the final day of the season in what could prove to be a nerve-jangling encounter at both ends of the division.
