Since late last week reports coming out of German said that Liverpool were on the hunt for Bayer Leverkusen and Germany U21 international Emre Can.

Both Bild and Kicker reported this again over the weekend and since then the British press have gotten a hold of the story and ran with it.

The 20-year-old has been on their radar for two years after impressing scouts at a tournament in Mexico.

Bild contacted the player's club to enquire about the official bid and got this reply from Bayer Leverkusen's sporting director (and German football legend Rudi Voller).

"There is still no official request,"

Bild believe that can change quickly. Because of the strong interest from Liverpool a lightning-change looms.

Can's versatility would massively appeal to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers as the German can play in the central midfield role but the 20-year-old has been deployed at the back at times both centrally and in both full-back positions.

He is a thoroughly modern midfielder, technically sound with two good feet, who is not content with simply getting and giving it.

If the deal was to go through Can would project to compete with Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen for a spot alongside skipper Steven Gerrard in the middle.
