Rafa still keen on Neill
02 Sep 2006 - 10:31:53
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed that the deal to sign Blackburn Rovers full-back Lucas Neill could be resurrected in the January transfer window.
The Reds shelved their bid to land Neill on Thursday as they didn't want to allow Stephen Warnock to leave as part of the package, but Benitez has not ruled out a future move for the Australia international.
He told the club's official website: "It was disappointing. We tried but in the end the situation was impossible.
"Blackburn wanted to sign Stephen, but we made it clear we wanted to keep the player. They asked to sign him and receive a fee, so we had to say forget it.
"The conversations I had with Blackburn were friendly and they are good people, but in the end we had to say 'okay, we cannot do it'.
"Maybe we can do more business with a right-back in January.
"I know Lucas Neill really wanted to come here and maybe there will be a possibility in the future, but we must also analyse the market in January."
