Rafa hails world-best Gerrard
19 Sep 2008 - 16:20:50
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has hailed Reds skipper Steven Gerrard as the best midfielder in the world.
The 28-year-old England international goes into the game against Stoke City on 99 club goals in all competitions, having netted both goals in the 2-1 midweek Champions League victory at Marseille.
Benitez told reporters: "Steven has quality, he's a fantastic player and 99 goals is amazing for a midfielder.
"But he can score more. Once he has scored his 100th, then we will give him the objective of maybe 150.
"He scores great goals that few other players can manage. We are lucky to have the best midfielder in the world.
"He scores fantastic goals and there are maybe only two or three players in the world who can score the sort of strike he managed in Marseille.
"He did it again today in training, so we know he can score like that again.
"He can score a lot more for us, maybe get near to doubling his current tally if he takes the penalties too.
"To do that he must play in a good team, but it is possible he could achieve a record of goals for a midfielder."
