Rafa - Gerrard can improve

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez believes Steven Gerrard can become even better after agreeing a new deal at the club. Gerrard has agreed a two-year extension to keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2013. The new contract could see Gerrard end his career at Liverpool and the news is a massive boost for the club ahead of the title run-in. The new deal is reward for Gerrard's stellar form in recent weeks with the Reds skipper netting six goals in three games prior to the international break. Benitez rates Gerrard as one of the best players on the planet and he feels he can improve in the years to come. "I am very happy because I think it shows his commitment to the club," said Benitez. "It is very good news for the club, for the team, for the fans so everyone around Liverpool should be really pleased. "I always say Steven is one of the best players in the world. To say who is the best is very difficult because there are a lot of very good players, but he is one of the best clearly. "I think he is more mature and he is keen to learn in every single training session so I think he can still improve. "We have been working very hard this week with a lot of players and agents and the easiest one has been Gerrard. As soon as we said to him we want to talk about an extension it was agreed very very soon." Uncertainty Benitez admitted earlier this week that before signing his new contract he considering leaving Liverpool. The Spaniard finally ended speculation over his future by inking a new five-year deal last month and he concedes uncertainty over the ownership of the club led him to question his position at Anfield. "Uncertainty at the club was an issue, but I was very clear I wanted to stay and as soon we clarified two or three things it was easy and was done," added Benitez. "Yeah it was a difficult time, in the meantime we were playing important games so we have to focus on both things, but anyway it is done, we are happy and we are going forward."
