Poll Result - Benitez on the brink as Liverpool struggle

24 November 2009 10:09

With Liverpool struggling this season, the majority of football.co.uk's readers feel Rafael Benitez's days on Merseyside could be numbered.

Our poll shows 58.7% think Benitez will be out of the door by the start of next season as a consequence of his poor start to this year.

The Spaniard has had a rollercoaster reign as boss of Liverpool, having lifted the Champions League and FA Cup but failed to bring the Premier League to Anfield.

The Merseysiders currently sit seventh in the table, a massive 13 points behind leaders Chelsea.

They are also on the brink of Champions League elimination in the group stages as they trail second placed Fiorentina by five points.

Defeat to Hungarian champions Debrecen at the Ferenc Stadium tonight certainly do Benitez no favours as he looks to reignite their season after the return to fitness of captain Steven Gerrard.

The former Valencia manager recently spoke of his desire to end Liverpool's 20-year wait for Premier League glory.

If he does not make them Champions of England once again he would consider his tenure a failure.

He also admitted he would consider quitting if star striker Fernando Torres, recently linked with a £100m move to Manchester City, was allowed to leave the club.

It remains to be seen if Benitez can save himself from the chop but Liverpool's financial worries will certainly leave him feeling fairly safe.
