PFA Fans Player of the Month: Luis Suarez and Santi Cazorla stake their claim
Luis Suarez, Santi Cazorla, Shane Long and Anthony Pilkington stake their claim
Luis Suarez (Liverpool)
Luis Suarez continued his rich vein of form with two goals to help Liverpool to a 3-0 win over Wigan at Anfield. The Uruguayan took his tally for the season to 13 goals with two second half strikes with the impressive Jose Enrique netting the third with his first goal for the club. Not for the first time this season, Suarez was the star of the show, however.
Jamie Carragher says: “For him to do what he is doing in a side that is still building under the new manager I wouldn't swap him for anyone in the Premier League.”
Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)
The Gunners midfielder was likened to both Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona after the club’s record signing inspired a 5-2 win against ten-man Spurs. His majestic performance was all the more remarkable considering that he’d just made an 11-hour flight from Panama with the Spanish national squad. The £15million Arsenal paid Malaga for his services is looking money well spent.
Jack Wilshere says: His touch and his vision is just a joke. He is a dream to play with. He never gives the ball away, he is creative and busy round the pitch. He is a joy to play with."
Shane Long (West Brom)
West Brom maintained their impressive start to the season as they beat Chelsea 2-1 at The Hawthorns to move up the heady heights of fourth place. No-one deserved the victory more than Shane Long who scored the first and set up the second for Peter Odemwingie who was full of praise for his fellow striker who overcame the death 24 hours earlier of his grandmother to produce another match-winning performance.
Steve Clarke says: “I have run out of words to describe Shane. He was up front on his own and at times he was a little bit isolated. But he never stops trying for the team and his was one of a number of top performances for the team."
Anthony Pilkington (Norwich)
Anthony Pilkington's brilliant header helped Norwich stun Manchester United to maintain the East Anglian club’s recent revival. Former United trainee Pilkington stole a yard on Chris Smalling before looping a header over Anders Lindegaard on the hour mark, and the Canaries hung on for a famous win. The 2011 signing from Huddersfield is looking more and more at home on the Premier League stage – and there’s more to come.
Chris Hughton says: “It was a great goal by Anthony; he deserved that for his efforts. But the win was down to a team effort. At the moment, we have got 11 players who are confident in their own ability and absolutely working their socks off.”
