Pastures new can lead to pastures blue

Once the King of the Kop; the golden boy of the national team: Michael Owen could do no wrong.

Sadly, after a glorious start to his career with Liverpool and England, not all has gone according to plan for one of the most likeable figures in the game.

A mega-bucks move to Real Madrid was a just reward for all he’d achieved at Anfield. But at what cost?

The grass in Spain proved to be not as green as that of England’s pleasant land, and he soon returned to familiar territory with Newcastle. And so on to Manchester United.

Injuries have unfortunately limited his appearances, and contributions in terms of goals, and this summer he reached another crossroad in his fragmented career.

At the relatively young age of 32, we should all hope that Michael’s latest move to Stoke presents him with an opportunity to revive former glories.

He deserves another crack at the big time but you can’t help thinking, all those years ago, he would have been better off staying at Liverpool.

Better the devil you know, as they say. The grass is not always greener. Rising stars like Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson; take note.
