Oldham 3 Liverpool 2: match report

27 January 2013 17:59
Liverpool suffered FA Cup humiliation as Oldham Athletic forward Matt Smith scored twice to inspire the League One strugglers to a stunning fourth round victory at Boundary Park. Smith, a free transfer from non-league Solihull Moors, ended the game with a dislocated shoulder after being carried off in the closing stages. But the towering forward had already done the damage to Liverpool by that stage, sending Brendan Rodger’s team to an embarrassing exit. The victory may also help keep Oldham manager Paul Dickov in a job, with the former Manchester City forward under huge pressure after a worrying run of league results. With Friday evening’s arctic conditions dumping nine inches of snow onto Boundary Park and the surrounding streets and car parks, it required the work of an army of volunteers - including the father of Oldham midfielder Jose Baxter - to ensure this game went ahead.
