New injury scare for Gerrard
21 Oct 2009 - 08:27:28
Under-fire Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that Steven Gerrard suffered a recurrence of his groin injury in the first half of Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Lyon.
The Reds captain will have tests on the problem on Wednesday after limping out of the Anfield action after only 25 minutes.
Gerrard had missed England's 3-0 win against Belarus last week and Liverpool's weekend loss at Sunderland with the same injury.
"I think it is the same problem," said Benitez after the 2-1 defeat to the French side that left his side's hopes of progressing to the group stages of the Champions League hanging by a thread.
"He felt something, so he knew it was better to come off.
"It wasn't a risk to play him. He wanted to play, the doctor said he was okay and he has been training for the last two days. Sometimes it is bad luck.
"We have too many problems with different players and we won't know more until we check on Wednesday."
Tuesday's defeat leaves Liverpool with three points from their opening three Champions League matches this season.
