Moores quits Anfield board

19 Jun 2009 - 07:19:43

Former Liverpool chairman David Moores has resigned from the board of directors at Anfield.

Moores, who took the role of chairman in 1991, was handed a place on the board after selling the club to American duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks two years ago.

Moores stepped aside as he identified that the club required further investment to keep in touch with fellow Premier League heavyweights Manchester United and Chelsea.

However, reports claim he has not always seen eye-to-eye with Hicks and Gillett and admitted their handling of the club had left him "heartbroken" last year.

The American duo have also come under fire from Reds fans after borrowing £350million to finance their purchase of the club and then delaying work on the start of a proposed new stadium.

"Liverpool FC confirmed today that David Moores has resigned from the club's board of directors," read a brief club statement.

"Mr Moores will, however, retain his position as club honorary life president."
