Masch confident over fitness

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is confident of being fully-fit and ready for the start of the new Premier League season.

The Argentina international was afforded extra time off during the summer by Reds boss Rafa Benitez and is behind some of his team-mates in terms of pre-season preparation.

Mascherano played 45 minuets of the midweek friendly against FC Lyn in Oslo and believes he will be ready to face Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

"Maybe I need a little bit more work because I arrived back when my team-mates had already been back 10 days, but I will be in a good position by the start of the new season," he told the club's official website.

Liverpool host Atletico Madrid in their final warm-up game on Saturday and Mascherano is looking forward to playing a full part in the clash with the Spanish side.

He added: "After Saturday's game against Atletico, we'll have seven days to get in top condition for the Premier League."

The former West Ham United midfielder spent the early part of the summer fending off speculation linking him with a move to Spanish and European champions Barcelona.
