Masch banishes United memories
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is delighted to have avoided a repeat of last season's red-card misery at Old Trafford and is now focused on a 100 per cent conclusion to the current campaign.
The Argentine was sent off in controversial style after offering words of dissent in the direction of referee Steve Bennett as Liverpool slumped 3-0 at United in 2007/08.
However, Mascherano was back to his best as Liverpool blitzed defending Premier League champions United 4-1 on Saturday to restore a glimmer of hope in the title race.
And the 24-year-old was pleased to rid himself of the memory of last term's outing at the home of Liverpool's North-West rivals.
"It's a much better feeling than last year. I had to forget about what happened here last year," Mascherano told Liverpool's official website.
"Sometimes things happen like this in football but I was sure going into this game that I wouldn't have the same problem at Old Trafford this time. I was determined not to suffer that again."
But while Mascherano has hailed the weekend mauling of United, he insists Liverpool must maintain focus on the climax of the season.
"I don't know if we can win the league. We don't need to think about the title race right now, we just need to keep this form going," he said.
"It would be wrong of us to start talking about being in the title race again. United still have a good lead over us and we need to keep winning.
"If United don't lose then it will be really difficult to catch them but we need to win all our games. We have to take it step by step.
"All we can do now is keep going. There are still nine games to go and we
need to win every single one to have a chance of catching United."
