Martin Keown: Can Andy Carroll cut it, and is Gary Cahill the new Rio?

Strong in the air: Andy Carroll leaps highest again[LNB]Andy Carroll's goal tells you everything about the player - an explosion of power from a swashbuckling centre forward. [LNB]He played quite deep, picking up the ball and linking well, but even though his movement was good he lacked match sharpness after so many weeks without football.[LNB] Carroll has that sort of lumbering, heavy-set physique which means it will take him a while to get match fit again after a long lay-off, but once his core strength is there he will be a serious handful in an England shirt. [LNB]His finish showed his dynamism - and his push on the defender is typical of the physical competitor. [LNB]There were a few crosses into the box which a sharp Carroll would have got on the end of, but he is still so dominant in the air. He leaps like a high-jumper and is difficult to defend against. [LNB]He kept trying to knock the ball down to team-mates but there was little on offer. [LNB]Verdict:[LNB] Once he's back playing regular football he'll cut it with the best. [LNB]Gary Cahill played better than partner Phil Jagielka, but he still has a bit to learn. At 25 he's three years younger but Cahill looked more mature. [LNB]He is quick and never shies away from challenges. He played neat, simple balls without giving away possession cheaply.[LNB] He reads the game well and has an awareness of when his opponent is sneaking offside but I'd like to see him drop off and deal with the delivery if he sees the ball coming. [LNB] Hands full: Gary Cahill (right) had a tough night dealing with Asamoah Gyan (left)[LNB]He has no problems with one-on-ones because his footwork is excellent but he needs to attack crosses and dominate the area. [LNB]Jagielka had some sticky moments. He tried to play Asamoah Gyan offside in the first half and later opted to track a runner when he should have kept his eye on the ball to head it away. [LNB]Verdict:[LNB] Cahill has improved markedly over the last 12 months but must learn to deal with crosses. [LNB] England 1 Ghana 1: Andy, that's just Fab!
